​Our tip for today is a very common error that we find a lot of beginner ESL learners make (and quite a few higher level students, too). But don’t worry. It’s a very simple mistake with such an easy fix, so you can correct it now and never have to worry about it again. It’s “Nice to meet you“.

​No, I’m not introducing myself. “Nice to meet you” is the mistake. I don’t mean that it’s grammatically wrong. The problem is the context.

Context is the situation or setting in which you say or do something. For example, when you meet somebody for the first time, it is perfectly fine to say “Nice to meet you.”

But when you see that person again for the second or third time, we wouldn’t say it in that context. If you say it again, it seems like you forgot that you’ve met that person before.

It’s more appropriate to say something like “Nice to see you again.” or “It’s good to see you again.”

​This is another example of direct translation which we discussed in our previous post (Don’t Expect Too Much). In Korean, it’s fine to say 반갑습니다 whenever you meet someone, whether it’s the first or the fifth time. But not in English.

So remember: ‘Nice to meet you’ is only used when you meet someone for the first time. When you see that person again, you can say “It’s good/nice to see you again.”
